Dear Parents and Guardians:

The Binghamton City School District is committed to helping all schools reach high standards for student achievement and giving all children in every school a quality education. We are making progress, but there is still work that needs to be done. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is required to identify schools in NY that are in need of improvement as required under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA NYSED established a new set of indicators to measure school performance for 2018-19. Based on these new indicators and 2017-18 data from the NYS ELA and Math assessments, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School has been identified as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school.

In addition, under New York State Education Law Section 211-f, when a school is identified as struggling (CSI for 2018-19 and previously identified as a priority school), the school is identified as a school under receivership. Benjamin Franklin Elementary meets this criteria. The school will be given an initial two-year period under superintendent receivership to improve student performance. A meeting has been scheduled on February 12th at 5:00pm (snow date of February 13th at 5:00 pm) in the auditorium at Benjamin Franklin to provide detailed information regarding this designation and the next steps planned to support the school. Please also join us for dinner after the presentation and the Franklin Family Literacy Night.

Every effort is being made to provide the highest quality instructional program to best meet the needs of your child. Parents are an integral part of ensuring their child's success in school. We ask that you support your child by making sure that she/he comes to school every day on time and participate in as many school activities as possible. Please stay in close contact with your child's teachers and school principal to monitor your child's academic progress.
